JUDO-HAMAGUCHI MARTIAL ARTS
Judo means “the way of giving way. It is a Japanese martial art founded in 1880 by Professor Jigoro Kano. Judo was developed from jiu-jutsu with the intention of
creating an art which would be very safe to practice as a form of physical and spiritual education. Thus, the judo repertoire emphasizes throwing and pinning
techniques, as well as chokes and armlocks for adult students. Falling techniques are taught first. Striking techniques are only included in advanced katas (forms)
but not in randori (sparring) or competition. The emphasis in judo is on randori practice rather than kata. Judo has been included in the Olympic games since 1960
for men and 1988 for women. Therefore it is a truly unified martial art with one international governing body overseeing black belt grading standards and the rules
of competition. Sensei Deidre Hamaguchi - 2nd dan. Call 212-926-JUDO (5836)
