Making Your Booth Functional and Profitable

Having a great booth is vital to your long-term success as a vendor. You need your booth to help you sell your products. Creating the right booth involves buying the right equipment and standing out from the crowd.

How do you decide what to sell? And how do you get customers to actually stop and look and perhaps buy your stuff? Variety seems to be the key, both in pricing and in products. In addition to a variety of products it's also important to offer a variety of price points. A lot of guests will pay $25 for something but not many will pay $250.

In finding out what to sell like anywhere else make sure you listen to our guests. They are the ones who help you decide which direction to take. Often they will make comments and ask if you have something in particular. Guests are always trying to tell you what would make them open their wallets and pull out their money. Listen to them and acting on their advice directly lead to more sales.

  2. Things to bring in your toolbox

Creating A Great Display

One of the biggest opportunities is booth setup. It takes time to set up an attractive and organized booth. It shows pride in workmanships and guests will believe that you will take the same care when crafting a product or service. With a little preparation, attention to detail, and a little imagination, guests will stop by and generate sales.

  1. Sight: Your booth needs to have its own feel and theme to set it apart from the rest. Use fonts on your signage that represent the feel of your product. Choose fabric and materials that complement your product. Try using a table cloth or give your tables more height with portable shelves. Just remember that everything you use in your booth including your display, your products, your equipment, and your supplies are all things that you’ll have to lug around.
  2. Sound: Use a stereo with some music and a volunteer to work the crowd. Consider using a portable audio system. (click here for a $99 example unit )
  3. Taste: Try giving away free samples
  4. Smell: Bakers and flower sales people have an advantage here!
  5. Touch: Provided gift bag giveaways (which include literature!).

Practice Makes Perfect

It is very important to practice your booth set-up at home and to perfect it from the comfort of your home. Most vendors will tell you how much their craft show booth has evolved over time. It takes a lot of practice and energy to discover what works best for you.

Take notes from other craft show vendors and use your imagination and talent to create a visually appealing craft show booth.

How to Setup a Community Education Booth

  1. Select staff members who make ideal community spokespersons--informed advocates who enjoy telling people about your organization’s programs
  2. Make sure you have a calling card—a basic flier that provides people with information on your services, a map with directions to your organization, hours of operation, and important phone numbers.
  3. Prepare two sign-up sheets. 1) for potential volunteers 2) for those people who would like more information on a particular topic.
  4. Stock your table with inviting giveaways such as bumper stickers, pins, magnets, and stickers. Bring T-shirts, mugs, or other items that your organizations sell and with some luck, guests will leave with your organization on their car, refrigerator, hands, and, additionally, more importantly, in their minds.
